(12444) Prothoon is an asteroid from the group of Jupiter Trojans that was discovered on April 15, 1996 by EW Elst at the European Southern Observatory . Jupiter Trojans are asteroids that move around the sun on the Lagrange points on Jupiter's orbit .
The asteroid was named after Prothoon , a warrior of Aeneas in the Trojan War .
