(1618) Dawn is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 5 July 1948 by the South African Astronomem E. L. Johnson , from the Union Observatory in Johannesburg , was discovered off.
The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (1618) Dawn are almost identical with those of the smaller, if one of the absolute brightness starting from 14.5 to about 11.50, asteroids (13765) Nansmith .
(1618) Dawn was named after the discoverer's granddaughter.
