(1817) Katanga is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 20th June 1939 by the South African astronomer Cyril V. Jackson in Johannesburg was discovered.
The asteroid is named after the province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then: Belgian Congo , later: Zaire ).
