(20947) Polyneikes is an asteroid belonging to the group of Jupiter Trojans . This describes asteroids that move around the sun on the Lagrange points on Jupiter's orbit .
(20947) Polyneikes was discovered on September 29, 1973 by the Dutch astronomers Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675). It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 4 .
The asteroid is named after the mythological Greek hero Polynices , the son of Oedipus and friend of Tydeus . He took part in the campaign of the Seven against Thebes and fought there against his brother Eteocles , where the two killed each other.
