(431) Nephele is an asteroid of the main inner asteroid belt discovered on December 18, 1897 by the French astronomer Auguste Charlois at the Observatory of Nice .
The asteroid is named after Nephele , a figure from Greek mythology.
Nephele orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.612 ( perihelion ) to 3.678 ( aphelion ) astronomical units in 5.58 years . The orbit is inclined 1.828 ° to the ecliptic , the orbital eccentricity is 0.170.
