(48801) Penninger is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 22, 1997 by the Austrian astronomer Erich Meyer at the Davidschlag observatory ( IAU code 540) about 30 km north of Linz in Upper Austria .
The celestial body belongs to the Dora family, a group of asteroids named after (668) Dora .
The asteroid was named on August 9, 2006 after the Austrian geneticist Josef Penninger (* 1964).
