(65) Cybele is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 6 March 1861 by the German astronomer Wilhelm Tempel discovered. Tempel called him Maximiliana.
The asteroid was named after Cybele , who in Greek mythology represents a mother of gods.
During an occultation of the star AGK3 +19 599 by Cybele in 1979, there was evidence of an 11 km large companion orbiting Cybele 917 km from its center (if the occultation was central). During this occultation, the circumference of 23 km previously determined by the IRAS satellite could also be confirmed.
Cybele group
(65) Cybele is the namesake of a group of asteroids that move beyond the Hecuba Gap with orbital axes between 3.27 and 3.7 AU. The objects have eccentricities of less than 0.3 and orbital inclinations of less than 25 °. The members of this group are in 7: 4 resonance with Jupiter, which stabilizes their orbit.
