(7208) Ashurbanipal is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid was named after Aššur-bāni-apli (669 BC – 631/627 BC), who was the 83rd king of the Assyrian Empire and who created an important library in Nineveh that has rendered invaluable services to modern Assyriology .
