(8446) Tazieff is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on September 28, 1973 by the Russian astronomer Nikolai Stepanowitsch Tschernych at the Crimean Observatory ( IAU code 095) in Nautschnyj .
The asteroid was named on October 13, 2000 after the Polish-born Belgian geologist and volcanologist Haroun Tazieff (1914–1998), who became known for his films about volcanic eruptions and was nominated for an Oscar in 1967 .
