(9142) Rhesus is an asteroid belonging to the group of Jupiter Trojans . This describes asteroids that move around the sun on the Lagrange points on Jupiter's orbit .

(9142) Rhesus was discovered on October 16, 1977 by the Dutch astronomers Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675). It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 5 .

The asteroid is named after the mythological Thracian hero Rhesus , the king of the Thracians , who took part in the Trojan War on the side of the Trojans and was killed in their sleep by Odysseus and Diomedes with his twelve companions .
