(9385) Avignon is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 9 October 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid was named on April 2, 1999 after the city of Avignon , located on the east bank of the Rhône , the capital of the Vaucluse département and the papal seat from 1309 to 1423 . The old town with the Gothic Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) from the 14th century, the bishop conditioning, the Rocher des Doms and the famous bridge, the Pont St. Benezet , belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is by the Avignon Festival also known far beyond the French borders.
