(9487) Kupe is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on October 17, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .

The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis .

(9487) Kupe is named after Kupe , the discoverer of New Zealand ( Maori language : Aotearoa ) in Māori mythology .
