The Çirkin ( Turkish Çirkin = ugly ) is a RoRo ship that sails under the flag of Tanzania . In 2020 it was embroiled in a dispute between NATO and Turkey .

history

It was in 1980 Titovo - shipyard in Kraljevica in the former Yugoslavia built and perverse first under the name of Cres for the shipping company Lošinjska Plovidba OOUR BRODARSTVO in Rijeka . The ship has been sailing under the name Çirkin and the Tanzanian flag for Avrasya Shipping International since 2014 .

At the international negotiations to settle the civil war in Libya on January 19, 2020, the conflicting parties declared that they would keep a ceasefire and all participating states, including Turkey, declared to comply with the arms embargo that had been decided. But on January 29th, the French Navy announced that Turkey would break the arms embargo with the cargo ship Çirkin . In the following time she is said to have commuted often between Turkey and Libya .

At the end of May 2020 the Çirkin left the Istanbul port of Haydarpaşa with the destination Gabès in Tunisia . However, it was suspicious that she was escorted by Turkish military ships and that she deactivated the Automatic Identification System two days after she left Turkish waters . She could neither be identified nor her position tracked. The French frigate Forbin , which was returning from the EMASoH mission on the Strait of Hormuz , discovered the ship on May 27, without AIS, heading for Libya and launched a helicopter for reconnaissance. When they approached and they wanted to establish radio contact, the Çirkin changed course in the direction of Tunisia and two Turkish frigates also appeared, who accompanied the ship at some distance and indicated that it was under Turkish protection. The helicopter returned to Forbin and when they moved away the Çirkin changed course again towards Libya and reached the port city of Misrata on May 28th . According to intelligence information supplied battle tank M60 , MIM-23 Hawk anti-aircraft missiles , 105 machine guns and Syrian mercenaries, notably the Sultan Murad Division , to the Libyan National Army .

On June 2, 2020 the Çirkin returned to the port of Haydarpaşa and was loaded with containers on June 5 and 6. According to official information, the ship left the port for Gabès on June 7 at 1:45 p.m. But the two Turkish warships TCG Gökova and TCG Oruçreis soon joined as escort ships. When the ship was near the Greek island of Psara , a Turkish fighter aircraft flew over the position and violated Greek airspace. Since it was suspected that the Çirkin would bring another illegal arms shipment to Libya , it should be inspected by the Greek frigate Spetsai , which was used for Operation Irini in the Mediterranean. A helicopter was started and when it approached, the Turkish Navy pointed out that a ship that was under military escort could refuse to inspect. The head of the mission, the Italian Rear Admiral Fabio Agostini ordered the return of the helicopter and the Çirkin continued the voyage unabated. On the same day the French frigate Courbet approached and demanded information about the type of cargo and the port of destination. Instead of answering, the escort ship TCG Gökova is said to have recorded the Courbet three times with the fire control radar . The Turkish representatives rejected this representation. Rather, the Courbet is said to have fed itself in an aggressive manner and is said not to have responded to radio messages. On June 11th, the Çirkin reached Misrata and is said to have unloaded weapons instead of the indicated drugs.
