The Huaylas District is located in the Huaylas Province in the Ancash region of western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 54 km². The 2017 census counted 1716 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3041, in 2007 it was 1894. The district administration is located in the 2721 m high village of Huaylas with 410 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huaylas is located 21 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Caraz .
Geographical location
The Huaylas District is located on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Negra in the northwest of the Huaylas Province. In the far east, the district extends to the banks of the Río Santa, which flows north .
The Huaylas district borders in the extreme southwest on the Caceres del Perú district ( Santa Province ), in the northwest on the Santo Toribio district , in the northeast on the Huallanca district , in the extreme southeast on the Santa Cruz district and in the south on the Mato district .
