The district of Yuracmarca is located in the province of Huaylas in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on May 9, 1923. It has an area of 547 km². The 2017 census counted 2087 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1958, in 2007 it was 1835. The district administration is located in the 1518 m high village of Yuracmarca with 487 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yuracmarca is located 36 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Caraz .
Geographical location
The Yuracmarca district is located in the northeast of the Huaylas Province. The Río Santa flows north through the Cañón del Pato gorge along the western district boundary. Its right tributary, Río Quitaracsa, crosses the extreme south of the district. The Cañón del Pato and Quitaracsa hydropower plants are located there . The east of the district lies in the Cordillera Blanca . The 5947 m high Nevado Alpamayo rises on the southern district border in the east . In the northeast of the district rises the 5735 m Nevado Champará .
The district of Yuracmarca is bordered to the west by the district of Huallanca , to the north by the districts of La Pampa and Cusca (both in the province of Corongo ), to the northeast by the district of San Juan ( province of Sihuas ), to the east by the district of Pomabamba ( province of Pomabamba ) and in the south to the Santa Cruz district .
