The Santa Cruz district is located in the central east of the Huaylas Province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district founded on July 10, 1945 has an area of 332.78 km². At the 2017 census there were 4,229 residents in the Santa Cruz district. In 1993 the population was 4324, in 2007 it was 4840. The administrative center is the village of Huaripampa with 313 inhabitants , located above the right bank of the Río Santa , which flows north along the western district boundary , at an altitude of 2900 m (as of 2017 ).
Geographical location
The Santa Cruz district has a longitudinal extension in the WSW-ONO direction of almost 30 km. In the east, the district includes the Quebrada Santa Cruz valley in the Cordillera Blanca with the glacial lake Laguna Jatuncocha. In the district rise the mountains Artesonraju ( 6025 m ), Alpamayo ( 5947 m ) and Nevado Santa Cruz ( 6259 m ).
The district of Santa Cruz borders in the north with the district Yuracmarca , in the east with the districts Pomabamba and Huayllán (both in the province Pomabamba ), in the southeast with the district Yanama ( province Yungay ), in the south with the district Caraz and in the west with the districts Mato , Huaylas and Huallanca .
