The Mato district is located in the Huaylas Province in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​106 km². In the 2017 census, 1971 residents were counted. In 1993 the population was 2281, in 2007 2109. The district administration is located in the 2239  m high village of Villa Sucre with 656 inhabitants (as of 2017). Villa Sucre is located 10 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Caraz .

Geographical location

The district of Mato is located in the high valley of Callejón de Huaylas on the left bank of the north-flowing Río Santa in the central west of the province of Huaylas. The western district boundary runs along the watershed of the Cordillera Negra .

The district of Mato borders in the southwest with the district Pamparomás , in the west with the district Caceres del Perú ( province Santa ), in the north with the district Huaylas , in the east with the district Santa Cruz and in the extreme southeast with the district Caraz .
