Baron Élie Robert de Rothschild (born May 29, 1917 in Paris ; † August 6, 2007 in Scharnitz , Tyrol ) was a French banker, winemaker and member of the Rothschild family .

Life

Élie de Rothschild was the son of Baron Robert Philippe de Rothschild (1880-1946) and Gabrielle Beer (1886-1945). During the Second World War he became a German prisoner of war . He was interned at Colditz Castle with his brother Alain . In 1945 he took over the Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac near Bordeaux , which had been destroyed by German occupiers , which he rebuilt in the following decades and led to a new bloom. In the mid-1970s, he handed over the management of the winery to his nephew Éric de Rothschild . In addition, Élie de Rothschild was considered a great art collector , who particularly appreciated the works of Rembrandt , Thomas Gainsborough , Jean Dubuffets and Picasso .

He held a 25 percent stake in the Rothschild Frères bank . He converted the former Paris-Lyon-Marseille railway company into a travel company with hotels and restaurants. Rothschild died of a heartbeat in his hunting lodge near Scharnitz near Innsbruck , where he was one of the largest hunting tenants .
