The Ökolöwe - Umweltbund Leipzig e. V. is a non-profit association based in Leipzig that works in the interests of nature and environmental protection. This is committed to environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable development in the Leipzig region. The eco-lion sees itself as a regional platform for environmentally friendly ideas, projects and campaigns. It has around 11 employees and around 1,500 sponsors.

tasks

The goals and tasks of the association are the protection, preservation and restoration of the natural environment in and around Leipzig, as well as an environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable development of the region. This also includes influencing Leipzig's environmental policy.

The association offers information and advice, education and active support on nature and environmental issues. He runs the Leipzig Environmental Library and the Connewitz City Garden. He also works with other regional environmental associations and citizens' initiatives.

history

The association has its roots in the GDR . It emerged at the end of 1989 from environmental groups from the church and the cultural association . The environmental library, which was founded in 1988, is part of the eco-lion and was created within the "AG Environment Protection" of the Leipzig youth parish office, which was founded in 1981.

On November 23, 1989, Leipzig environmental groups of the church and the Kulturbund joined forces to form the Ökolöwe association and worked on the round tables at the council of the district and the city. In January 1990, the eco-lion moved into its own rooms in the House of Democracy . In the first year, the eco-lion, together with the citizens' initiative “Stop Cospuden '90”, put an end to lignite mining in the Cospuden opencast mine . Large parts of the southern alluvial forest were saved.

On April 9, 1994, residents and the association opened the Connewitz city garden with a joint planting campaign. In mid-September 1997, the city of Leipzig started a one-year traffic experiment with single-lane traffic, parking lanes and cycle paths on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. The basis for this is an eco-lion concept. In autumn 1998, the regional planning procedure for State Road 46 was accompanied. In 2001 the eco-lion started the nationwide campaign “Eating in Style”. The dominant theme in 2002 was the felling of the trees on the dikes in the Leipzig city area, planned by the dam maintenance department. After various protests and demonstrations through the city center, a lawsuit brought the cessation of felling actions in 2003. The prevention of the state road 46 and the first results of the “Green Gates” project followed in 2006. On the initiative of the association, the Climate Alliance Leipzig was founded in 2007.

Environmental library

Since it was founded, the association has been running the Leipzig Environmental Library, the largest public institution of this type in Germany. It has around 2,000 users annually. Around 22,000 media are available in the environmental library supported by the Office for Environmental Protection, the Office for Economic Development, the Bürgerstiftung, Stadtwerke Leipzig , Sparkasse Leipzig , the European Social Fund for Germany and the State of Saxony, as well as through other donations from media, subscriptions and money .

Sustainable mobility

Turn it down

"Make it quieter - contribute to the noise action planning in Leipzig" is a model project of the association in cooperation with the offices of CivixX and StadtLabor. Together with the people of Leipzig, quiet areas worth protecting and specific noise problems are to be identified and feasible solutions to be worked out. In contrast to the official noise action plan of the city of Leipzig, the eco-lion does not primarily want to build on calculated sound data, but on the subjective perceptions of those affected. It is also about small-scale sources of noise. The Federal Environment Agency , the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology , Deutsche Bahn , and the Leipzig transport company are all involved.

Connewitz City Garden

A garden laid out in the early 1930s as a school garden for the Hildebrand School has been redesigned as a public show, advice and recreation garden since 1993. The design framework that existed in parts formed the basis and was supplemented by the addition of regional, site-appropriate shrub and woody plantings. Today the garden consists of different areas such as herb, farmer and vegetable garden, different types of beds, an orchard area, a pond and a dry stone wall. There are also "insect hotels" and a campfire site.

Agriculture and Food

Looking over the shoulder of organic farmers

The project is part of the association's environmental education program and aims to give children and young people an authentic picture of organic farming. As part of the project, the association visits day-care centers and schools and organizes project days with excursions to organic farms and organic processing companies, where participants can gain a direct insight into the production of the food they consume every day. The association offers advanced training courses for multipliers and designs brochures on selected topics that can be used in lessons. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture within the framework of the Federal Program Organic Farming and Other Forms of Sustainable Agriculture (BÖLN).

Environmental Policy & Nature Conservation

Leipzig riparian forest

The association is committed to the preservation of the Leipzig floodplain forest. With regard to the flood protection concept of the city of Leipzig, which provides for tree felling in the alluvial forest, the association also criticizes the approach of the city and the state dam administration. In addition to criticizing the felling of the trees, the eco-lion also calls for the rivers in the alluvial forest not to be opened for motorboats and for the expansion of the waterways to be stopped. The Leipzig alluvial forest is a protected landscape area in its entirety and a nature reserve in parts.

Environment days / Ökofete

The association has organized the Leipziger Ökofete since 1990 and the Environment Days since 1997, which have enjoyed increasing popularity ever since. They offer associations and initiatives the opportunity to introduce themselves to a large audience and to draw attention to their work. The Environment Days are a one to two-week program in and around Leipzig that takes place in spring on the occasion of World Environment Day . With over 15,000 visitors, the Ökofete is the city's largest environmental festival. It is a spring festival for the whole family, with around 130 stands and a music program inviting people to join in, listen and celebrate.

Lawsuit against dike clearance 2002/2003

In December 2002 the Leipziger Dammeisterei submitted an application for massive deforestation of water bodies in the city area to secure the dikes that had suffered from severe flooding in August 2002. According to the eco-lion, the authority's plans contradicted the already planned or ongoing projects for the renaturation of the alluvial forest. The alluvial forest should serve as a natural catchment area for floods. A repair of certain dykes and the associated tree felling measures in landscape and nature reserves is therefore superfluous. When the protests were ineffective, the eco-lion filed a lawsuit. On January 23, 2003, the Saxon Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen decided that the tree felling had to be stopped.
