Övsət Abdinov

Övsət Bəhram oğlu Abdinov ( Russian Овсат Бахрам оглы Абдинов Owsat Bachram ogly Abdinow , English transcription Ovsat Bahram oglu Abdinov; * 23. February 1944 in balakan district , rayon balakan district , AsSSR , USSR ; † 29. October 2016 ) was an Azerbaijani physicist in the field of High energy physics .

Life and accomplishments

Abdinov studied physics at the Institute of Physics of Azerbaijan State University and graduated there in 1966. He was then an aspirant (1966–1969), laboratory manager (1969–1973) and lecturer (1973–1975) at the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Institute of Physics of the Azerbaijan State University. In 1975 he was appointed head of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the AsSSR , later the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. He worked closely with the United Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna , where he was a senior researcher between 1993 and 2002, with the Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Protvino near Serpukhov and later with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland together. Abdinov taught at the Baku State University and the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University .

In 1972 he defended his dissertation and obtained his doctorate in physical and mathematical sciences in 1986. His research interests focused on the theoretical description of interaction processes in hadron - nucleon collisions. He was the first to hypothesize the formation of clusters in light nucleons, which was later proven experimentally. Since 1997 he has been the coordinator of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the ATLAS detector at CERN and set up the first worldwide LHC computing grid segment in Azerbaijan.

On June 30, 2014, Abdinov was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
