İlhan Berk

İlhan Berk (born November 18, 1918 in Manisa , † August 28, 2008 in Bodrum ) was a Turkish poet and essayist.

As one of the best-known representatives of the so-called İkinci Yeni in Turkish literature, he had great influence on a group of subsequent poets.

Berk, who was a teacher and translator in his main occupations, also created significant literary translations of foreign poetry into Turkish.

Life

İlhan Berk was born in 1918 in the western Anatolian provincial capital Manisa. He wrote his first volume of poetry at a young age. After a short teacher training course in Balıkesir , he studied pedagogy and French in Ankara in 1945 . He worked as a teacher until 1955, after which he worked as a translator for the largest universal bank in Turkey, TC Ziraat Bankası, until 1969 . In addition, Berk devoted himself to literary work. The poet spent his later years as a freelance writer in Bodrum , where he died in 2008.

Berk's first volume of poetry, Güneşi Yakanların Selamı , was published in 1935. From the 1950s onwards, numerous others followed until the end of the 1990s. In his lyrical work, Berk, who is considered one of the most innovative poets in Turkey, saw himself as an opponent of socially critical poetry and an advocate of an elitist understanding of poetry (artists for art's sake). Berk later received several literary prizes for his internationally acclaimed poems, including the Institute for the Turkish Language (TDK) Prize in 1979 and the Behçet Necatigil Poetry Prize in the first year of its award in 1980.

In the lyrical work of the author, Gero von Wilpert emphasizes his "concrete verbalization of nature and life with reference to modern trends such as concrete poetry". According to the Lexicon of World Literature, “his poetological reflections” are also considered to be “important” . As a literary translator, Berk also translated foreign-language poetry into Turkish. His development of poems by Arthur Rimbaud and Ezra Pounds for the Turkish-speaking area is considered important.
