Ohura is a small village in the Ruapehu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The village is located around 24 km west of Taumarunui and around 36 km east of the west coast to the Tasman Sea , in the valley of the Mangaroa Stream . The Ohura River flows in a meandering shape about 1 km east of the village.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 129 inhabitants, 21.8% fewer than in the 2006 census.
economy
Ohura was formerly the center of coal mining in the region and determined the economic life of the village for a long time.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 43 leads through Ohura , which connects the village about 18 km northeast with the New Zealand State Highway 4 and above with Taumarunui as the largest city in the region. A small country road leading west from the village connects the village with the west coast and the New Zealand State Highway 3 that runs along it .
Rail transport
The Stratford - Okahukura Line , a railway line branching off the North Island Main Trunk Railway via Ohura to Stratford and connecting there to the Marton-New Plymouth Line , runs through the village without a stop.
