The Reka ( Slovenian for 'river') is a river in Croatia , Slovenia and Italy , which flows 54 km above ground and around 35 km underground and has created a huge cave system in the Karst of Slovenia, the Škocjan Caves ( UNESCO world cultural and natural heritage ) .
Run and landscape
The Reka rises near Klana in Croatia near the border with Slovenia as Vela voda at an altitude of 720 m on Turkove škulje (or as Račka močila on Vrh ogreje a little south). At the Croatian-Slovenian border, the name changes to Reka .
The river now flows in a north-westerly direction through the Dolina Reke (Rekatal) between the Brkini south-west and the Snežnik (Krainer Schneeberg) north-east. From Zabice and Trbčane it flows through the approximately 15 km long valley widening of Ilirska Bistrica . In Topolc a meandering narrow valley begins, the Reka passes the location of Prem and it flows from the right Mrzlak from the Kosanska dolina . South of the Vremščica , near Famlje , the valley widens again as Vramsko polje , then a narrow valley begins again.
The Reka disappears at Škocjan and flows over waterfalls and through fissures through the Škocjan Caves . At a depth of 160 m, it disappears into a cave lake. The further underground course is largely unknown. 33 km from the Reka River, already at the western end of the Karst (Kras, Carso) in Italy , the Timavo rises as a mighty karst spring near San Giovanni di Duino and flows into the sea after two kilometers in the port canal of Monfalcone .
