The Simonturm ( Polish Żabi Koń , Slovak Žabí kôň , Hungarian Simon-torony ) is a mountain in the High Tatras with a height of 2251  m npm on the Polish - Slovak border.

Location and surroundings

Below the summit the valleys are Fish Lake Valley with the lake Czarny Staw pod Rysami in the north (Poland) and Mengsdorfer valley in the south (Slovakia).

The Żabi Koń is located in the main ridge of the Tatra Mountains . Neighboring peaks are the Meeraugspitze ( Rysy ), in whose massif the summit is located and from which it is separated by the Froschseejoch pass ( Żabia Przełęcz ), and the Frogsee Tower ( Żabia Turnia Mięguszowiecka ) separated from it by the Obere Froschseescharte mountain pass ( Żabia Przełęcz Wyżni ) ) in the massif of the ox back ( Wołowy Grzbiet ).

etymology

The name Żabi Koń / Žabí kôň can be translated as frog horse . The name comes from the fact that the summit has the shape of the head of the chess figure knight or horse and the frog lakes are not far from the mountain. The name Simonturm was also common after its first climber.

tourism

The Żabi Koń is not on any marked hiking trail. However, it is accessible to climbers with a permit from the administration of one of the national parks . The shelters Schronisko PTTK nad Morskim Okiem and Schronisko PTTK w Dolinie Roztoki are suitable starting points for an ascent . It is considered a difficult summit by climbers and is therefore very popular as a challenge. For a long time the ascent was considered impossible because of the steep walls, later as very difficult, especially its north face. Jenő Wachter had an accident on it in 1907 . His death is considered the first strictly alpine death in the Tatra Mountains.
