Ƶ
The Ƶ (lower case ƶ) is a letter of the Latin writing system . The letter consists of a Z / z with a slash . The Ƶ is a common variant of the Z in cursive script, the ƶ is less common in script as a variant of the z.
Orthographically, the letter was used in the 1920s to spell out various Turkic languages such as Azerbaijani or Tatar . It was used to represent the voiced postalveolar fricative , but fell out of use when the Turkic languages switched to the Cyrillic alphabet. The languages that later returned to the Latin alphabet (except for the Chechen alphabet ) used the J for this sound.
In the Polish language this symbol is used sporadically or by hand as a replacement for the symbol Ż (Z with a dot above), which also represents a voiced postalveolar fricative. The letter also occurs in the Latin alphabet of Kildin Sami , which is no longer in use today .
