Șumița ( Czech Šumice , Hungarian Cseherdős ) is the smallest of the six villages of the Banat Czechs in the Caraș-Severin County , Romania .
geography
Șumița lies at an altitude of approx. 600 m in the Banat Mountains in southern Romania. The closest of the other Czech settlements, Ravensca , is over 30 km away. For a long time, this distance meant a walk of about 13 hours for the residents and thus a high degree of isolation from the rest of the language group.
history
Șumița was founded in 1828 as the last Czech village in the Banat. The reason for the settlement of the emigrants from Central Bohemia was of a military nature; the aim was to settle the almost uninhabited strategically important area near the Danube border . At that time, Șumița was only an outpost of the garrison in Petnic , a district of the Iablanița municipality .
The initial population of around 100 grew to 210 by 1991, but after the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu the number of inhabitants decreased dramatically, in 2002 only 145 people lived here, which is mainly due to the emigration of young people. Today the Czech school in Șumița is one of the smallest schools in Europe, in 2007 only four children were taught here. In general, the village has to struggle with great infrastructural difficulties, there is no running water, the next bus stop is approx. 7 km away.
The only attraction in Șumița is the nearby forest cemetery.
