Bāʾ ,باء, is the second letter of the Arabic alphabet . It emerged from the Phoenician Beth ("house") and is thus related to the Latin B , the Greek Beta and the Hebrew Beth . The numerical value 2 is assigned to it.
Sound value and transcription
The Ba corresponds to the German B in "Berta". It is therefore reproduced with a "b" in the DMG inscription.
Graphic modifications
In order to be able to write the “p” sound, which does not occur in Arabic, the letter Pe was developed from the Ba (with three dots) in the Persian alphabet . This Pe is sometimes used in Arabic lexicons, atlases etc. to ensure the correct pronunciation of words in other languages.
