… The Stories We Could Tell is the eighth studio album by the US rock band Mr. Big , released on September 30, 2014 .

background

Billy Sheehan , Pat Torpey, Paul Gilbert and Eric Martin won over fans and the trade press with their comeback album What If ... , which was released in 2010 after eight years of separation :

What if  … leaves no doubt about the functioning of these great musicians as a band, nor about the sincerity of their new start. Immediately with the driving Undertow , a remarkable statement succeeds (...) An extremely charming comeback of this extremely misunderstood hard rock formation. "

- Daniel Böhm : Rocks - the magazine for classic rock; Issue 01/2011, page 97

“This is a successful reunion album! After the divine tour, Mr. Big report with What If ...? back and answer the question of their fans, who wondered for years whether the band would get together again and what the result might sound like. Now we know. "

- Jenny Rönnebeck : Rock Hard, issue 285 (2011)

The group also reappeared in the hit lists: The album was listed at number 50 in Germany, number 7 in Japan and number 117 in Great Britain .

In spring 2013, the band members decided to record another album. Due to the numerous obligations that guitarist Paulo Gilbert and bassist Billy Sheehan have due to their skills, which are in demand around the world, the recordings were difficult. Due to this fact, Eric Martin was obliged to take over almost the entire songwriting for the album. In terms of composition, the basis for the album was therefore laid by Eric Martin, drummer Pat Torpey and producer Pat Regan. The group was also confronted with the news that Torpey had Parkinson's disease. The first symptoms were already partially apparent during the rehearsals for the 2011 comeback tour.

reception

The German magazine Rocks wrote that The Stories We Could Tell was "the first of the eight studio albums to date that doesn't really have the familiar Mr. Big feeling". Sheehan's "normally inimitable growling bass" is "often difficult to guess," and it actually becomes noticeable that thirteen songs were written by Eric Martin and that "the string artists only had the setting in the studio". Individual songs on the album are highlighted in the review: Gotta Love the Ride is "one of the numbers that stretched back to the seventies with their heavy riff", Satisfied is a second one in which "Mr. Big on Foghat ”, and in What if We Were New it sounds“ minimally like old Aerosmith in the verse. ”Other highlights are Fragile, Just Let Your Heart Decide “ as a neat adult version of Just Take My Heart, ”and Cinderella Smile. Nevertheless, The Stories We Could Tell remains "the weakest Mr. Big album," which the reviewer awarded four out of six possible points.
