(1991)

Mr. Big is the debut album by the American hard rock band Mr. Big .

Emergence

Billy Sheehan , who is considered one of the best bass players in the hard rock / metal scene , decided to form a new band after a jam session with Paul Gilbert , the guitarist of Racer X. Sheehan had previously played with Talas and in the band around David Lee Roth , but dropped out after recording the group's second album, Skyscraper .

As a singer , the two engaged Eric Martin, who was singer of the group "415" (later: "Eric Martin Band") from 1978 to 1985 and then had released two albums ( Eric Martin and I'm Only Fooling Myself ) as a solo artist by 1988 . The drummer was Pat Torpey, who had previously played for John Parr , Belinda Carlisle , Robert Palmer and The Knack .

The band got a record deal with Atlantic Records and went into the studio, record their debut album by Kevin Elson produced was. The album included a cover version of Steve Marriott 's Humble Pie title 30 Days in the Hole . Humble Pie had released the title on their album Smokin ' .

Mr. Big was released in 1989, and the singles were Big Love and Addicted To That Rush .

Cover

The cover featured a pair of well-worn shoes, a walking stick and a cylinder , as well as the band's logo.

reception

Mr. Big reached number 46 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the Billboard charts for 18 weeks . In Great Britain , the group's debut album reached number 60, but immediately fell off the hit list after the first listing.

None of the singles could reach the charts.

The German magazine Rock Hard awarded 8 points and wrote:

“After John Sykes (Blue Murder) and Jake E. Lee (Badlands), the third super musician, bass god Billy Sheehan, has now founded his own project. At his side are the former racer X-guitarist Paul Gilbert, singer Eric Martin and a studio drummer named Pat Torpey. The result is a very song-oriented hard rock album that contains masterly craftsmanship (just pay attention to the relatively overtly mixed bass lines), but no complacent solo interludes. Eric Martin remains a bit faceless, whose slightly roughened voice is by no means weak, but here he is pushed out of the front man position by the bass and the Steve Vai-like guitar in places. "
