Back to Budokan is a live album by Mr. Big . It was released on Frontiers Records in June 2009 .

Emergence

Mr. Big had been a successful group in the 1990s who, with the help of a few radio-oriented titles, had managed to appeal to a wide audience and gain worldwide fame. Their most successful single was the song To Be with You , published on their second album Lean Into it , with which the group reached number one in the charts in Germany , Switzerland , Austria and the USA in 1991 - only in Great Britain it only reached number three . Even if the band later could not reach such high chart positions, pieces like Just Take My Heart or the cover version of the Cat Stevens song Wild World became well-known titles of the group. By their breakup in 2002, the band had released six studio albums and achieved the greatest success in Japan. A live album was published there for practically every studio album.

In 2009, the founding members of the group decided to try a comeback. To this end, the group brought in Japan the best-of album Next Time Around out and then went on the same tour , from the concert on 20 June 2009 at the Nippon Budokan was fully recorded (Tokyo).

In addition to numerous hits, the band also played the song Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple , in which the musicians swapped their instruments and thus emphasized their versatility. In addition, three newly recorded studio titles were released with the album.

reception

Rocks gave no rating for the album, but wrote:

After a seven year break, Mr. Big is back with a full double CD and the DVD of the same name. The successful concert on June 20, 2009 in Tokyo's Budokan Arena documents what the supergroup can still do. Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey are playfully at their best (including choir singing), serve a lot of hits (›Green Tinted Sixties Mind‹, ›Wild World‹, ›Just Take my Heart‹) and delight me in heaps Single spots. Two new studio numbers provide a certain amount of variety to ›Back to Budokan‹ - the new composition ›Next Time Around‹ and the Argent cover Hold ›Your Head Up‹, which would have been better for a bit more - and ›To be with ‹You as acoustic version "

The review of Rock Hard magazine was also unrated :

The recently reformed Americans are on their toes, if you consider that the double live album and the DVD of the same name“ Back At Budokan ”, which is also available, were recorded on the current tour and are already in stores. The euphoria of the Japanese is with hits like 'Green-Tinted Sixties Mind', 'Just Take My Heart', 'Addicted To That Rush', 'Wild World', 'Promise Her The Moon', 'Baba O' Riley 'and' To Be With You´ oversized, while there is a fascinating dead silence in the impressive solo interludes of the outstanding musicians. One would have liked to have done without ´Smoke On The Water´, the new track ´Next Time Around´ sounds like MR. BIG at its best. And there have never been any bad live performances from singer Eric Martin and his colleagues. "
