(12638) Fransbrüggen is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 29, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa, which is also known as the Hertha family (after (135) Hertha ).
(12638) Fransbrüggen was named on September 9, 2014 after the Dutch conductor and recorder player Frans Brüggen (1934-2014), who made the recorder socially acceptable again as a concert instrument and in 1981 founded the orchestra of the 18th century .
