(17917) Cartan is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 15 April 1999 by the American Italo- astronomer Paul G. Comba at Prescott Observatory ( IAU code in 684) Arizona was discovered.

The celestial body was named on March 9, 2001 after the French mathematician Élie Cartan (1869–1951), who became known for his contributions to the theory of Lie groups and their applications.
