(24587) Kapaneus was discovered on September 30, 1973 by the Dutch astronomers Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 4 .

The asteroid is named after the king of Argos , Kapaneus , one of the seven heroes in the train against Thebes . He is the father of Sthenelos .
