(24654) Fossett is the orbit of Mars grazing asteroid of the main belt , which on 29 May 1987 by the astronomer Carolyn Jean Spellman Shoemaker and Eugene Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California was discovered.

The asteroid is named after the American adventurer , aviation pioneer and balloonist Steve Fossett (1944–2007), who was the first solo flier to circumnavigate the world in a balloon .
