(26661) Kempelen is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on November 27, 2000 by the Slovak astronomer Peter Kušnirák at the Ondřejov observatory ( IAU code 557) in the Czech Republic .

The asteroid was named after the Austro-Hungarian inventor , architect and civil servant Wolfgang von Kempelen (1734-1804), who became known throughout Europe through the Chess Turk who he constructed in 1769 .
