(28196) Szeged is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on December 15, 1998 by the Hungarian astronomers Krisztián Sárneczky and László Kiss at the Piszkéstető station ( observatory code 561) of the Konkoly observatory in the Mátra Mountains in northern Hungary.

The asteroid is named after the southern Hungarian city of Szeged , located on the lower reaches of the Tisza , which goes back to the Partiscum founded by the Romans and was first mentioned in 1183.
