(3554) Amon is a M - asteroid from Aten type . This describes a group of asteroids whose orbits partly run within the earth's orbit and cross it from within. Amun approaches the sun up to approx. 0.7 AU and thus even crosses the orbit of Venus .
Amun was discovered on March 4, 1986 by Carolyn S. Shoemaker and Eugene Shoemaker at Mount Palomar .
The name of the asteroid is derived from the Egyptian deity Amun (also called Ammon).
