Rhadamanthus was discovered on April 17, 1999 as part of the Deep Ecliptic Survey project at the Kitt Peak Observatory .

The planetoid moves on an elliptical orbit with a major semiaxis of 39.135  astronomical units around the sun in about 241 years . The eccentricity of the orbit inclined by 12.74 ° against the ecliptic is 0.155.

The asteroid was named after Rhadamanthys , a figure from Greek mythology .
