(5088) Tancredi is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 22 August 1979 by the Swedish astronomer Claes-Ingvar Lagerkvist at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code of 809) European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
(5088) Tancredi was named after the Uruguayan astronomer Gonzalo Tancredi (* 1963), who mainly deals with the evolution of comets and their interactions with asteroids.
