(6039) Parmenides is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on September 3, 1989 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence ( IAU code 511) in south-eastern France .

The asteroid is named after the ancient Greek philosopher Parmenides from Elea (~ 520/515 BC – 460/455 BC), who is counted among the pre-Socratics .
