(6540) Stepling is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 16, 1982 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov .

The asteroid was named after the German-Czech scholar and Jesuit Joseph Stepling (1716–1778), at whose request an observatory was set up at the Jesuit College Clementinum in Prague in 1751 , which he led as director.
