(678) Fredegundis is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on January 22, 1909 by the German astronomer Karl Wilhelm Lorenz in Heidelberg .
The asteroid was named after Fredegunde . She was the wife of Chilperic I , a Merovingian Frankish king in the 6th century. The name may also be derived from the opera Fredigundis by Franz Schmidt , which is based on the life of Fredegund.
