(7722) Firneis is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 26, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery happened during the second Trojan survey , during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .

The asteroid was named on February 11, 1998 after the Austrian astronomer and university professor Maria G. Firneis (* 1947), who founded the University Observatory Museum in Vienna and has been giving lectures on astronomy-historical topics at various universities in Austria since 1979 .
