(8079) Bernardlovell is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 4 December 1986 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station ( IAU code 688) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County was discovered.

The asteroid was named on July 26, 2000 after the British astronomer and pioneer of radio astronomy Bernard Lovell (1913-2012), who founded the Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory at the University of Manchester in Great Britain and was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1969 to 1971 .
