(9239) van Riebeeck is an asteroid of the main belt , which on May 3, 1997 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.

The asteroid was named on November 20, 2002 after the Dutch ship's doctor and businessman Jan van Riebeeck (1619–1677), who founded the Cape Colony in 1652 on behalf of the Dutch East India Company and was its first administrator.
