(9645) Grünewald is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on January 5, 1995 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in the Tautenburg Forest in Thuringia .
The asteroid was named on April 2, 1999 after the German painter and graphic artist Matthias Grünewald (~ 1480–1528), who is considered an important German representative of the Renaissance .
