The 101st light infantry division and later the 101st Jäger division was a major unit of the army of the German Wehrmacht during World War II .

The 101st light ID was deployed in Prague in December 1940 as a division of the 12th wave of deployment . It consisted of parts of the 35th Infantry Division , border infantry and various fortress units. From 1940 to June 1941 the division was in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and had a brief deployment in the Balkan campaign . In the summer of 1941 she was on the border with the Soviet Union pulled together and took as part of Army Group South on Operation Barbarossa part. Her stations during the war against the Soviet Union were Przemysl , Uman , Kiev , Kharkov , the Donets Basin and Isjum . In July 1942 it was renamed the 101st Jäger Division.

The renaming to the Jäger Division took place during the Battle of Kharkov . From mid-1942 the 101st Jäger Division took part in the offensive in the southern sector and advanced into the Caucasus. As a result of the defeat of Stalingrad , she had to retreat to the Kuban bridgehead after heavy losses in battles with the Red Army and partisans . At the end of 1943, the division was evacuated across the Kerch Strait and gathered on the Lower Dnieper . Together with the 1st Panzer Army , it was surrounded by Soviet troops in March 1944, but was able to join forces with the XLVI. Liberate Panzer Corps. She withdrew via western Ukraine , from there to Slovakia in October 1944 . This was followed by a further retreat via Hungary and Austria. The 101st Jäger Division surrendered in May 1945 when it was reduced to combat group strength.

Well-known members of the division

  • Willi Heinrich served in the 1st Battalion / 258. Jäger Regiment of the 101st Jäger Division and was wounded five times. After the war, Heinrich wrote well-known novels such as “The patient meat”, “In Stolzer Trauer”, “So long, Archie” and others. In his war novel “The patient meat” he processed his traumatic war memories and, among other things, accused the inhumane command structure of the Wehrmacht .
  • Hans Liebherr , master builder, inventor and company founder of the construction machine group Liebherr served in this division.
