history

Retail store in 2009

In 1998 the store was initially only opened as a record store and was well received by music lovers from the start. The shop quickly became a meeting point for musicians such as Björk , Sigur Rós , múm , but also for classical musicians. In 2003 a music label was established, primarily to support young and emerging talent.

In May 2006 a branch was opened in Copenhagen . The shop sold recordings of its own musicians as well as other Icelandic artists. The concept of the shop was like the concept of the Icelandic model: freshly brewed coffee was served in a friendly atmosphere while the customers listened to the music. The shop established itself and it became a tradition to hold concerts in the shop on Friday evenings. The shop was closed on January 26, 2008 with a concert by the Danish band The Tremolo Beer Gut .

With the closure of the branch in Copenhagen, a new webshop was opened that offers various merchandise items from the artists who are under contract with 12 Tónar .

On 21 June 2013, the magazine ran the headline Gramophone about 12 Tónar : "The best record store in the world?" (The best music store in the world?). In 2018, journalist Marcus Barnes named Tónar the best record store in the world in the New Musical Express 12 (number 1 on the list).

12 Tónar is a distributor for Icelandic music, but also other foreign labels. It's also an independent label . The label are, or were, among others, Mugison , Trabant , Singapore Sling , Apparat Organ Quartet , Pétur Ben , Eivør Pálsdóttir , Ragnheiður Gröndal , Jóhann Jóhannsson , Hildur Guðnadóttir , Skúli Sverrisson , Olof Arnalds , Ásgeir Trausti and Jakobinarina under contract.
