- January 6th : Emperor Mark Aurel opens the Roman campaign in the First Marcomannic War with an address to the Praetorians .
- During the Marcomann War, Marcus Aurelius and his co-emperor Lucius Verus move into their camp in Aquileia . First measures are the establishment of a military administration zone with large defense bases in northern Italy and the Danube provinces ( praetentura Italiae et Alpium ) and the raising of new legions.
- A pandemic , the so-called Antonine Plague , which brought in from the east the army returning from the Parthian War of Lucius Verus , spreads quickly within the Roman army and leads to a dramatic decimation of the troops.
