2- ( N -Morpholino) ethanesulfonic acid , also abbreviated as MES , is a synthetically produced buffer substance from the group of Good buffers that is frequently used in the life sciences . The pK s value of MES is 6.1 (25 ° C), the buffer range is pH 5.8-6.5. MES is structurally closely related to MOPS , which is the propanesulfonic acid derivative of MES.

MES is not metabolized by bacteria and eukaryotic cells, which is why it is often used for the production of weakly acidic buffered cultivation media, for example for plant tissue at pH 5.8. To produce sterile solutions, MES-containing solutions are sterile-filtered because the substance is destroyed by autoclaving. Another possibility is to prepare the solution under sterile conditions.
